Brentford 1-1 Norwich City: Bees stunned by late equaliser

Norwich City left it late for the fourth match running as they salvaged an unlikely point at Brentford.

The Canaries started well, but in-form Ivan Toney put the Bees ahead with his 100th career goal, meeting Bryan Mbeumo’s pass to finish from close range for his eighth goal in six games.

Henrik Dalsgaard blasted straight at Tim Krul from six yards on the hour as the hosts missed a string of chances to double the lead.

Norwich had rarely threatened after the break until Kenny McLean’s off-target shot took a big deflection off Mads Bech Sorensen and past the wrong-footed David Raya.

Daniel Farke’s side had scored winners beyond the 86-minute mark in each of their previous three matches, but had looked unlikely to salvage anything in a quiet second-half performance until lady luck smiled on them with a fortuitous equaliser on 87 minutes.

Norwich head the possession stats in the Championship with an average topping 60%, and saw plenty of the ball in a bright opening 20 minutes, with Emi Buendia’s close-range shot forcing David Raya into a smart reaction save, and Mario Vrancic sending a low shot skidding past the post.

But Thomas Frank’s side boasts the Championship’s second-best attack, with 13 goals in their opening eight matches, and once ahead, they created a flurry of first-half chances.

Emiliano Marcondes headed wide when well-placed before Krul dived full-length to claw out Toney’s powerful header, denying the Championship’s joint-top scorer a ninth goal in six games with a brilliant stop.

Grant Hanley missed a golden chance to level just before the break, heading over when Buendia’s free-kick found him unmarked eight yards out, but it was Brentford who had much the better of the second half.

The Bees had scored twice or more in seven of their previous eight matches, but failure to do so again saw them remain in 11th place, as Norwich extended their unbeaten run to four matches to stay fifth.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank:

“I think we performed well, played a very good game and I’m pleased with how we pressed Norwich in the second half.

“We had the chances. But it was decisive that we couldn’t score the 2-0 goal. And a goal like theirs is very random. I’d rather they’d put one into the top corner.

“But the positive is it was a good performance, played with good intensity, a game of two teams who like to dominate on the ball – and I think we came out slightly on top.”

Norwich City boss Daniel Farke:

“All in all that’s a good point on the road. Brentford are one of the favourites for promotion, so to be there with a late equaliser, it’s always a good point.

“I’m still not 100% happy. We could have gone for it more in the first half. Our pressing could have been more intense. We were a bit scared and showed a bit too much respect.

“But I was pleased we found a way to fight back into the game and found an equaliser. I’m pleased with our mentality and team spirit. There’s no doubt it was a deserved point for us.

“I don’t believe in coincidences. Our late goals come from good fitness, also our game, the way we exhaust our opponents. A great mentality, a winning mentality, and team spirit.”
